7.6 Pipeline Code

Measure the carbon footprint of code in the development pipeline.

Easy to implement

5 High impact score

Introduction:

For sustainability to be treated as a non-functional requirement on the same footing as security, performance and accessibility, it has to be actively measured and monitored during the development cycle, in the same way teams already check security with Snyk or accessibility with Lighthouse.

It’s also worth measuring at the infrastructure level, not just in the pipeline. All three major cloud providers now offer native carbon reporting; Azure’s Emissions Impact Dashboard (via Power BI) and Cloud for Sustainability API, AWS’s Customer Carbon Footprint Tool, and Google Cloud’s Carbon Footprint console and the open source Cloud Carbon Footprint tool works across all three from your existing billing data if you want a single, vendor-neutral view (there’s a live demo if you want to see it before committing to it).
